A lot of people on play the same way, with ruthless rushes and early attacks against your base. In skirmish mode, the computer is confoundedly difficult, and will rush you early and often, laying waste to your base before you even get a chance to get established. Set up a map, choose just one computer opponent, and try to beat him. The next thing you should do is practice against the computer in skirmish mode. At least play through the Human and maybe the Orcish campaigns, before you log onto and get your butt handed to you by a more skilled player. It's the best tutorial there is for getting to know Warcraft III, since it introduces every unit gradually and doesn't overwhelm you with everything at once. First, play the game all the way through in single-player.
That said, there are some general things you can do to make yourself better.
